The Middle Ground is a Craft and Horticulture project to support social and emotional wellbeing and is part of Cherry Orchards therapeutic Community. Cherry Orchards has been developing therapeutic work for forty five years in many areas and the work in crafts and horticulture have been particularly popular and beneficial for wellbeing .

The project offers sessions of three hours on a weekly basis in small groups led by experienced therapists. The craft work includes knitting, crochet and felt work of all kinds, skills can be taught and shared. We also use our home-grown dried flowers and lavender in the craft activity.

Horticulture includes working on the varied flower gardens, cut flower beds and herb growing as well as house plant care and cultivation. We save our own seeds and propagate cuttings. The purpose-built building provides all weather work possibility and also houses the community apple press. The cut flowers are used in the community and offered for sale to the public.

We aim to produce items for sale from both activities and raise money to make the project more sustainable as well as have our work recognised for its value.

The work is based in our beautiful, all-weather gardening building and cosy craft room, with access to the extensive and productive gardens.

The Middle Ground welcomes anyone over 18, regardless of experience or ability, and activities are tailored to individual interests, needs and capacities. So, if you (or someone you know) would like to support your own wellbeing, develop new skills and interests, or use and share existing skills, why not join us?

We particularly welcome people who feel isolated or lonely, live with anxiety or depression, are recovering from a life changing event or illness, or would benefit from adapted gardening space due to illness or injury  (note: the site has rough and uneven ground so you will need reasonable mobility to join the activities safely).
